Today the Tigers completed their first sweep of the Boston Red Sox since 1992. Playing without Magglio Ordonez, Pudge Rodriguez and Placido Polanco the Tigers managed to chase Red Sox ace Daisuke Matsuzaka from the game after the 5th inning before withholding a furious late innings comeback.
The top 3 plays from the game:
1. Curtis Granderson's superhuman robbery of a potential Wily Mo Pena home run. This has to be the number one play of the game and it's really not even close. Now, we've all seen plenty of guys leap above a fence to take a home run away but this one was much more special. From the moment the ball hit the bat Granderson was on a dead sprint to the left-center field fence. Timing his jump absolutely perfectly he rose above the wall, snatched the ball at the last second and smashed into the wall. How he managed to hold on is a mystery, but fans in the stands were treated to perhaps the play of the year.
2. Marcus Thames incredible home run to straight away center field. He absolutely crushed the baseball hitting it farther than any ball I can remember in the short history of Comerica Park. Maybe some balls were hit that far during the All-Star game??? Anyways, that was a treat that fans shouldn't forget anytime soon.
3. Todd Jones strikes out David Ortiz. After Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia singled to start the ninth inning it was understandable why Tiger fans would be nervous about the chances of preserving a slim one run lead. With slugger David Ortiz stepping into the batters box the game could easily have been over with just one swing. The day didn't belong to the Red Sox though and in one of his best performances of the year Todd Jones dramatically struck out Ortiz. Three batters later the Tigers were celebrating another victory.

Nice blog! I enjoyed your summary of the game. Especially the play with Granderson. He is definitely my Tiger!
